Death Wish Coffee has built one of the most recognizable brands in specialty coffee on a simple premise: more caffeine. The skull-and-crossbones branding, the "world's strongest coffee" claim, and the aggressive marketing have made it a cult favorite among people who want maximum caffeine from their whole bean. What the branding does not tell you: high caffeine and high acid go hand in hand, and Death Wish delivers both in significant quantities.
⚠️ The Acid vs. Caffeine Distinction That Matters
Reducing caffeine does NOT reduce acid. Decaf Death Wish — if it existed — would have the same pH (~5.0) as regular Death Wish. Acid and caffeine are separate properties determined by separate variables. High caffeine robusta blends like Death Wish are particularly high acid. Puroast achieves pH 5.82 through patented traditional roasting. 5X less acid. UC Davis verified.

Low Acid Brands Were High Acid (NC A&T 2024)
Death Wish Coffee uses a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans roasted dark to maximize caffeine content. Robusta beans naturally contain more caffeine than Arabica — roughly twice as much — and are also more bitter and more acidic by nature. The dark roast profile adds a slight surface bitterness reduction but does not change the fundamental acid chemistry. The result is coffee that is simultaneously high caffeine and high acid.
The brand's claim of "world's strongest coffee" refers to caffeine concentration — which is real. Death Wish does deliver more caffeine per cup than most commercial coffees. What it also delivers is an acid load that most daily coffee drinkers are not aware they are accumulating with every cup.
Robusta beans — used by Death Wish to boost caffeine — are naturally higher in chlorogenic acids and quinic acids than Arabica. These are the same stomach-irritating bitter acids that Dr. Takayuki Shibamoto's peer-reviewed research at UC Davis (JAFC, 2009) confirmed are converted into phenolic antioxidants through Puroast's traditional roasting process. In Death Wish, they are not converted — they remain. The higher caffeine means higher acid. The dark roast produces only a 0.1 pH difference — negligible. Death Wish likely falls in the pH 4.3–4.6 range.
For healthy adults who want maximum caffeine and can tolerate the acid load, Death Wish delivers on its promise. For anyone with acid reflux, GERD, IBS, gut sensitivity, or who simply drinks coffee multiple times daily, the acid accumulation from a high-robusta, high-acid blend is significant and compounds over time.

Death Wish uses a dark roast to mask the bitterness of its high-robusta blend. This feeds the persistent myth that dark roasting lowers acid. It does not. Dark roasting produces only a 0.1 pH difference from medium roast — a negligible, barely measurable change. All commercial dark roast coffee, including Death Wish, is still high acid at pH 4.8–5.1 at best — and with the robusta content in Death Wish, likely lower than that.
The NC A&T State University 2024 study confirmed that 6 of 7 coffees marketed as low acid were actually high acid. LACCSA certification requires independent laboratory verification of pH. Death Wish does not carry LACCSA certification.
Death Wish may work for you if: You are a healthy adult with no acid sensitivity, you want maximum caffeine, you drink coffee once a day, and you can tolerate a highly acidic beverage without stomach issues.
Death Wish is not recommended if: You have acid reflux, GERD, IBS, irritable bowel, or any gut sensitivity. You drink multiple cups per day. You have noticed coffee affecting your stomach, energy levels, or sleep despite the caffeine. You are on GLP-1 medications where gut health is a priority.
Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health identifies moderation and acid load as key variables in coffee's health profile. High caffeine does not equal high health benefit — it equals high stimulant load combined with high acid load.
Puroast whole bean delivers the caffeine of standard commercial coffee — from 100% Arabica beans, traditionally roasted to pH 5.82. The energy from a Puroast cup comes without the acid load that makes high caffeine robusta blends hard on the stomach. For people who drink multiple cups per day and want sustained energy without the cumulative acid impact, Puroast is the answer that Death Wish cannot provide.
The antioxidant advantage is significant too — 5X more phenolic antioxidants than average commercial coffee, confirmed by UC Davis peer-reviewed science. High antioxidant content supports sustained energy at a cellular level through mitochondrial support — a fundamentally different energy mechanism than simply loading robusta caffeine into every cup.
The performance coffee market has grown dramatically alongside the fitness and biohacking communities. Death Wish — with its maximum caffeine positioning — is a natural fit for this market. But serious performance athletes are increasingly aware that gut health is a performance variable, not just a comfort one. Gastrointestinal distress is the leading cause of race withdrawal in endurance events. Acid sensitivity, reflux, and gut inflammation compromise training consistency and recovery. A coffee that delivers maximum caffeine at maximum acid load is working against the gut health that athletic performance requires.
For performance-focused coffee drinkers, the optimal choice is maximum antioxidants + low acid + sufficient caffeine — not maximum caffeine at the expense of gut health. Wendl et al. (1994) confirmed that the acid in coffee — not caffeine — is the primary gastrointestinal trigger. Puroast delivers 95–120mg caffeine per cup (sufficient for most performance contexts) at pH 5.82 — protecting the gut health that makes consistent training possible.
The conversation about coffee and performance focuses almost exclusively on caffeine. But the most compelling long-term performance story in coffee is antioxidants. Phenolic antioxidants — specifically chlorogenic acid derivatives and melanoidins produced by Puroast's traditional roasting process — reduce oxidative stress at a cellular level. Oxidative stress is the primary driver of muscle damage, inflammation, and recovery time after intense training. Coffee with 5X more antioxidants than average commercial coffee is a recovery beverage, not just a stimulant.
Death Wish maximizes one variable — caffeine — at the expense of another — acid load and antioxidant density. The flash roasting that produces high robusta caffeine concentrations also destroys the phenolic antioxidants that could support recovery. This is the direct trade-off that most high-caffeine coffee brands never discuss. Puroast's traditional roasting converts the same quinic acids into antioxidants — maximizing the health-positive dimension of coffee while maintaining the caffeine that makes it functional. For long-term athletic performance, antioxidant density matters as much as caffeine. Puroast delivers both sides of the equation. Death Wish optimizes only one.

Is Death Wish Coffee high acid?
Yes. Death Wish uses a high-robusta blend — robusta beans are naturally more acidic than Arabica. Combined with flash roasting, Death Wish likely falls in the pH 4.3–4.6 range — among the most acidic whole bean coffees available.
Does the dark roast in Death Wish reduce acid?
No. Dark roasting produces only a 0.1 pH difference — negligible. Death Wish's dark roast reduces surface bitterness slightly but does not meaningfully reduce the acid load from its high-robusta blend.
Is there a high caffeine low acid whole bean coffee?
Puroast whole bean delivers approximately 95–120mg caffeine per cup at pH 5.82 — 5X less acid than average commercial coffee. For most daily coffee drinkers, this is more than sufficient caffeine without the acid load of high-robusta blends.
Can I drink Death Wish if I have acid reflux?
Not recommended. The high robusta content and flash roasting make Death Wish among the most acidic whole bean options available. For acid reflux sufferers, Puroast's pH 5.82 is the scientifically verified alternative.
Does caffeine cause acid reflux?
The evidence is mixed — but reducing caffeine alone has not been consistently shown to reduce acid reflux. Reducing ACID (higher pH) has been shown to help. The acid in the coffee is the primary variable, not the caffeine.
