Most people who switch to decaf whole bean coffee assume they are also reducing acid. They are not. Decaffeination removes caffeine — it does not remove acid. In most cases, decaf whole bean coffee has virtually the same pH as regular coffee (~5.0). If you are switching to decaf to protect your stomach, reduce acid reflux, or improve gut health, you are solving the wrong problem — unless you choose the right decaf.
⚠️ The Critical Decaf Acid Distinction
Reducing caffeine has NEVER been shown to help acid reflux. Only reducing ACID (higher pH) has been shown to help. Most decaf coffee has the SAME acidity as regular coffee (pH ~5.0). EXCEPTION: Swiss Water Process MAY reduce acidity by approximately 30–40% — a partial reduction only. CO2 and solvent-based decaf processes do NOT reduce acid at all. Even with Swiss Water Process's partial reduction, the coffee is still significantly more acidic than Puroast (pH 5.82) — which reduces acid 5X compared to normal decaf through roasting alone.

Low Acid Brands Were High Acid (NC A&T 2024)
There are three main decaffeination processes used in the industry today. None of them were designed to reduce acid — they were designed to remove caffeine.
Swiss Water Process (steaming method): Uses hot water and activated carbon filters to remove caffeine. MAY reduce acidity by approximately 30–40% due to the heat and moisture. A partial reduction only — not a genuine low acid solution. Still significantly more acidic than Puroast (pH 5.82).
CO2 Process: Uses supercritical CO2 to selectively extract caffeine. Does NOT reduce acid at all. The acid chemistry is identical to regular coffee after CO2 decaffeination.
Solvent-Based Process: Uses chemical solvents to strip caffeine. Does NOT reduce acid at all.
The assumption that decaf = low acid is one of the most widespread misconceptions in the coffee category. Studies do NOT show that removing caffeine reduces acid reflux symptoms. Wendl et al. (1994, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics) confirmed definitively that it is the acid in coffee — not the caffeine — that drives gastro-oesophageal reflux. Only reducing ACID — achieving a higher pH — has been shown to help acid reflux and gut health.
Even the best-case scenario — Swiss Water Process with its 30–40% partial acid reduction — still produces coffee that is significantly more acidic than Puroast. Confirmed by Dr. Takayuki Shibamoto at UC Davis (JAFC, 2009), Puroast achieves pH 5.82 through patented traditional roasting alone — no decaffeination required for the acid reduction.

Best for acid/gut health — full caffeine: Puroast Low Acid Whole Bean (pH 5.82 — 5X less acid, full caffeine). Acid reduction is the primary health lever. Caffeine reduction is secondary and largely irrelevant to gut health on its own.
Best for caffeine-sensitive with gut/acid issues: Puroast Low Acid Decaf Whole Bean (pH 5.82 — 5X less acid + reduced caffeine). The only decaf option that solves both problems simultaneously.
Marginal improvement over regular decaf: Swiss Water Process decaf from any brand (30–40% partial acid reduction only — still significantly more acidic than Puroast).
NOT recommended for acid/gut health: Any CO2 or solvent-based decaf (same pH as regular coffee ~5.0 — no acid reduction at all).
The NC A&T State University 2024 study confirmed that 6 of 7 coffees marketed as low acid were high acid. The same fraudulent labeling exists in the decaf category.
Puroast Decaf Whole Bean is built on the same traditionally roasted base as all Puroast coffees — pH 5.82, 5X more antioxidants than average commercial coffee, patented roasting technology confirmed by UC Davis peer-reviewed science. The decaffeination process removes caffeine without affecting the low-acid roasting chemistry. The result: the only decaf whole bean coffee that is genuinely low acid AND high in antioxidants.
LACCSA certification confirms the low acid claim is real. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health identifies antioxidant content as coffee's primary health contribution — and traditional roasting maximizes it even in decaf form.
1. Ask for pH verification: Not a claim — a laboratory result. Puroast provides UC Davis peer-reviewed science confirming pH 5.82.
2. Check the decaffeination process: Swiss Water Process is the best conventional option (30–40% partial acid reduction). CO2 and solvent processes reduce zero acid.
3. Look for LACCSA certification: The only independent standard in the low acid coffee category.
4. Ignore the caffeine-acid confusion: Decaf does not mean low acid. Only roasting chemistry reduces acid.
For coffee drinkers who want to reduce caffeine without eliminating it entirely, Puroast offers Half Caff options that solve the acid problem while moderating the caffeine load. Half Caff blends combine traditionally roasted low-acid beans with decaf beans — maintaining the pH 5.82 roasting chemistry throughout, at approximately 50% the caffeine of a standard cup.
Half Caff is the ideal option for: people tapering caffeine to reduce dependency, pregnant women who want some caffeine but not full exposure, people with mild caffeine sensitivity who love the ritual but notice afternoon jitteriness, and anyone over 50 whose caffeine metabolism has slowed. The key advantage over standard half caff blends: both the regular and decaf components of Puroast Half Caff are roasted using the same low-acid traditional process. You are not getting low-acid regular beans blended with high-acid decaf beans — you are getting low-acid chemistry throughout the entire blend.
Decaf whole bean labels are among the most misleading in the coffee category. Here is a field guide to what matters and what is marketing:
"Swiss Water Process" — Meaningful: Confirms the decaffeination method most likely to partially reduce acid (30–40%). Still not genuinely low acid without low-acid roasting chemistry, but better than CO2 or solvent methods.
"Organic" — Partially Meaningful: Confirms growing practices. Has no relationship to acid chemistry or decaffeination method. Organic decaf can still be extremely high acid.
"Smooth" — Meaningless: Smoothness is a flavor description — not an acid claim. All decaf coffees taste marginally smoother than their caffeinated equivalents because caffeine itself contributes slight bitterness. This does not indicate low pH.
"Low Acid" without LACCSA certification — Red Flag: The NC A&T 2024 study found 6 of 7 coffees marketed as low acid were high acid. Low acid claims without independent certification from LACCSA or UC Davis peer-reviewed verification are unverified marketing.

Does decaf coffee have less acid than regular coffee?
In most cases no. Most decaf coffee has the same pH (~5.0) as regular coffee. Exception: Swiss Water Process MAY reduce acid by approximately 30–40%. CO2 and solvent decaf processes do not reduce acid at all.
Can switching to decaf help acid reflux?
Reducing caffeine alone has NOT been shown to help acid reflux. Only reducing ACID (higher pH) has been shown to help. Switching to regular decaf does not reduce your acid load. You need a genuinely low acid decaf like Puroast.
Is Puroast Decaf Whole Bean truly low acid?
Yes — independently verified. Puroast Decaf achieves pH 5.82 through patented traditional roasting chemistry, confirmed by UC Davis peer-reviewed science and LACCSA certification. 5X less acid than regular or normal decaf coffee.
What is the best decaf whole bean for someone with acid reflux?
Puroast Low Acid Decaf Whole Bean. The only decaf option that reduces both acid (5X less, pH 5.82) and caffeine simultaneously.
Does decaf coffee have antioxidants?
Puroast Decaf goes further than conventional decaf — traditional roasting converts quinic acids into phenolic antioxidants, producing 5X more antioxidants than average commercial coffee, even in decaf form.
