French Press Brewing — Step by Step
What You Need
French press (any size — 8oz, 12oz, 17oz, 34oz are common). Burr grinder. Kitchen scale or measuring spoon. Gooseneck or standard kettle. Timer.
The Ratio
Standard French press ratio: 1:15 (1g coffee per 15g water). For a 12oz (355ml) cup: approximately 24g coffee. Using volume: approximately 1 heaping tablespoon per 4oz of water. Weight measurement produces more consistent results.
Step 1: Preheat the French Press
Add hot water to your empty French press and let it sit for 30 seconds. Pour out the preheat water. This prevents the brewing water temperature from dropping when it contacts a cold glass vessel — temperature consistency matters for extraction evenness.
Step 2: Grind Coarse
Grind your Puroast to a coarse consistency — similar to raw sugar or coarse sea salt. French press requires coarser grind than drip coffee because the grounds spend more time in contact with water. Fine grinds produce over-extracted, bitter French press and clog the plunger mesh.
Step 3: Add Coffee and Bloom
Add your ground coffee to the preheated French press. Pour just enough hot water (195–205°F) to saturate the grounds — about 2x the weight of coffee. Allow 30–45 seconds for bloom. This degassing step improves extraction evenness and flavor.
Step 4: Full Pour and Steep
Pour the remaining water slowly over the bloomed grounds. Place the lid on the French press with the plunger pulled up — do not press yet. Start your timer for 4 minutes. Do not disturb the brewing.
Step 5: Break the Crust (Optional)
At the end of the steep, gently stir the top crust of grounds with a spoon. This breaks the floating grounds and allows them to sink, producing a slightly cleaner cup. Skim the remaining floating grounds if desired before plunging.
Step 6: Plunge Slowly
Press the plunger down slowly and steadily over 20–30 seconds. If the plunger is very difficult to press, your grind is too fine. If it drops instantly, your grind is too coarse. Pour immediately after plunging — do not let coffee sit on the grounds or it will continue to extract and become bitter.
