Press Release: A Gourmet Solution to a Dietary Problem

Low Acid Coffee: A Gourmet Solution to a Dietary Problem

October 19, 2010

Woodland, CA – With potentially millions of customers up for grabs in the emerging low acid coffee category, Puroast® Low Acid Coffee, is brewing and tasting its gourmet product at the nation’s largest gathering of dieticians – the annual Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE)– in Boston November 6th.

“Puroast® is 100% gourmet coffee with 50% less acid than all other brands and is a great tasting solution for those coffee drinkers that get heartburn or acid reflux from their morning brew” says company CEO Kerry Sachs. He adds, “We’re the only coffee that has what these consumers want – great tasting gourmet coffee with validated research to confirm the low acid benefit”.

A growing interest is developing among health professionals, including gastroenterologists and dieticians, to recommend reduced acid in consumer diets. Brewed coffee is considered an “acidic beverage” and is identified by the American Gastroenterological Association as a leading cause of acid reflux and heartburn. Low acid orange juice is one such product enjoying success with acid-affected consumers.

Puroast® Low Acid Coffee has conducted extensive consumer and scientific research that confirms the products’ low acid properties, symptom relief efficacy and satisfying taste. It is the only company to have their findings published in a food science journal . “Our laboratory research shows other leading brands to have approximately three times more acid than Puroast®” says Dr. Taka Shibamoto, PhD food scientist from the University of California, Davis. He adds “this is quite significant, as Puroast® produces this coffee without chemical treatments”.

Folgers, America’s largest coffee brand, distributes a product called Simply Smooth, that claims its “gentle java” is, “roasted to reduce certain irritants associated with stomach discomfort” , yet no scientific or consumer research is available to evaluate. This is a concern for health professionals and consumers alike, both looking for factual product information when making their decisions on dietary change.

Puroast® is challenging Folgers and others to a “taste and health” competition. “We think the FNCE event would be a great venue to have a blind taste test between Puroast®, Simply Smooth and any other coffee pursuing the low acid consumer”, states Sachs and adds “we’ll even supply the brewers”.

Both brands are now going head-to-head in retailers throughout the country, including Walmart, Kroger, Hannaford Brothers, Publix and Kings. To learn more about Puroast® Low Acid Coffee, visit their website, www.puroast.com.

Press Release: Walmart To Sell Low Acid Coffee

Woodland, CA – The latest trend in coffee products – Low Acid Coffee – will debut in Walmart stores beginning this October. Puroast® Low Acid Coffee is a highly successful brand that fits a growing demand by consumers for healthier, great tasting food and beverages. As many as 1 in 4 coffee drinkers suffer health problems related to coffee acidity, and Puroast® looks to have a product that is both great tasting and doesn’t produce the acid burn caused by conventional brew.

Puroast® is 100% gourmet coffee that has 50% less acid than all other roasted coffees on the market. Published research from the University of California and clinical surveys show that over 90% of those consumers so affected by coffee acidity can drink Puroast® with symptom relief from the usual acid reflux or heartburn caused by other brands.

A proprietary process is the foundation for this new coffee product, which solves the historic problem of providing rich, full-bodied coffee without causing stomach discomfort. Several doctors and pharmacists now recommend Puroast® as the coffee of choice for their patients with gastrointestinal health problems.

Puroast® will be rolling the product out with Walmart in their Southeastern Region stores. More information about Puroast Low Acid Coffee can be found online at www.puroast.com.

Understanding pH levels and your body

We put a lot of things into our body every day: coffee, water, grains, meat, fruit, vegetables, sugars, starches. Everything that goes into our bodies has a place on the pH scale, which ranges from acidic (levels 0-6), neutral (7.0), or alkaline (8-14). Ideally, your body’s pH level should be neutral: represented by a 7.0 on a pH scale.

Most coffee typically has a pH level at or about 4.0: that is, they are very acidic. Pure, clean tap water is neutral (7.0), while sodas are typically in the 2.0-3.0 range. The more acidic things you put in to your body, the more irritated your stomach and intestinal tract may become. In other words: the more acidic food and beverage your consume, the more off balance your body’s pH level can become.

What does this have to do with your health? High levels of acidity in your body can impact your immune system, as well as a sharp decrease in energy. Too much acid in your body can also lead to bone degeneration. For people with gastrointestinal problems, too much acid in their diet can cause severe discomfort or other more serious consequences. People who suffer from too much acid in their diet may find themselves turning to antacids to alleviate discomforts.

It’s easy to harm your body by putting too much acid into your system: a cup of coffee or two in the morning, a soda with lunch, a glass of wine with dinner. All of these beverages increase your body’s acid levels and adjust your natural pH level. You can combat a high pH level with simple dietary changes. Instead of having a soda for lunch, try a glass of water with lemon. If you can’t resist a bull bodied Merlot with your dinner, add some asparagus, zucchini, or bell peppers to your dinner. Adjusting your meals to be an even balance between acidic and alkaline is easy. Most people eat a balanced diet without much conscious thought.

Here’s some food for thought: most table wines have a pH level of 3.3 to 3.7, while coffee typically ranges from 4.0 to 5.0, depending on the roast. Wine is seldom enjoyed without an appetizer or meal of sorts, which can help to offset its acidic pH level.

But what about your morning cup of coffee? How many people are guilty of running out of the house with just a cup of coffee in tow? Skipping breakfast and drinking coffee takes away your opportunity to return your body’s pH level to its neutral zone. By adding an alkaline food to your breakfast, you can alleviate the problems caused by drinking coffee alone.

Sometimes pairing coffee with food simply isn’t an option. What if you’re just not a breakfast person? Or what if you enjoy coffee as a mid-morning treat? Do you give up your mid-morning treat or your early morning jolt? Do you deal with the discomfort by taking antacids?

Instead of making a sacrifice, you can try drinking low acid coffee. Drinking a low acid coffee can help contribute to bringing your body back to its neutral pH level. According to Dr. Shibamoto at the University of California at Davis, Puroast Low Acid Coffee is only a 5.8 on the pH scale. Our pH level is significantly lower than other coffees that claim to be low acid: other brands are 3.5 to 5 times greater than Puroast. Puroast is real coffee, freshly roasted using gourmet arabica beans and a patented process that relies on 90% sustainable energy. Next time you get that mid-morning stomach lurch, think about what you had for breakfast that morning: your body may be telling you something. Give Puroast a try and your body will thank you!

For more information on the pH level of foods, you can check out the Better Bones website and their lists of acidic and alkaline foods.

Stomach Friendly Coffee versus Low Acid Coffee – Unsubstantiated Claims

We have been receiving alot of inquires on the claim by various companies of stomach friendly coffee. What is stomach friendly and what do they do?  The question can be answered with the facts and the published research.

Puroast Low Acid Coffee’s research on the chemistry analysis by Dr. Shibamoto of UC Davis validates our “low acid claim”. The natural Puroast Process does not remove or add anything to the coffee. The proprietary process does not create the high concentrations of pH relative to other coffees.  We consider these conditions of heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, IC, IBS and the other related conditions to be serious which is why we have done the hard research.

Unsubstantiated Claims – Coffee Companies who claim they are low acid or stomach friendly but don’t provide research or published fact is wrong from a consumer standpoint and by the Federal Trade Commission.

We are asking all coffee companies who make claims of stomach friendly or low acid to present their research at the World’s largest gastroenterology conference in May.

We are also asking them to make their research known to the public and their claims on why they are “stomach friendly” or low acid.
